The Police Link program involves police officers visiting the Women’s and Children’s Hospital on a monthly basis to positively engage with children, building trust and confidence in SAPOL while delivering crime prevention messages. The program is also delivered at the Flinders Medical Centre.
The visits are well received and bring a smile to children, providing an uplifting distraction from their hospital admission. Topics discussed range from awareness of the police role, 000 emergency and cycle safety for younger children to internet and personal safety in public places, drug and alcohol awareness and bullying for the older children.
In addition to monthly visits police officers also participate in Easter and Christmas events at the Women’s and Children’s hospital where a broad range of SAPOL sections attend along with popular children’s characters. Both events are a highlight for children particularly those who have lengthy hospital stays.
